Thomas is the model of all..

Hello friends!

Our family has recently joined up with BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) in ABQ. We have been working our way through the book of John. For this week, we studied John chapter 11, and I found some rather interesting things in this chapter that I had never really thought about before.

So, this chapter is talking about the death of Lazarus. Jesus hears the news that His friend is sick, but He doesn't depart from the place He was staying (near the Jordon where John was baptizing). Why? If He had gone right away, He would have been able to save Lazarus from death, true, but because He didn't leave until later, He was able to give more proof that He was indeed the Son of God by Raising Lazarus from the grave. Now, here is the part that really intrigued me. Verses 14 and 15 say "So Jesus said to them plainly, 'Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there so that you may believe; but let us go to him.'" Now comes verse 16. "Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, 'Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."

This Verse may not have a lot that people ever really notice. However, our Bible study question was "what were Thomas's strength and weakness in that verse". Now, I am thinking, "what weakness?" But when you take a closer look, you get a better view. Thomas was faithful and showed a strength by being willing to go with Jesus. However, his weakness was DOUBT. For me, that is a tough word. It means we aren't totally trusting in Jesus. I know several of you, if not everyone, have had this struggle before. We want to do thnigs on our own and not trust Jesus to the utmost. We don't need Him for everything, surely?? I mean, can't we take care of a few things ourselves? No, I am not talking about whether we are having PB&J for lunch, but other areas in our life. For us right now, it is trusting that God will take care of us and give us the buyer that we need for the ranch. However, it is rather difficult as we count down the days until we will need to move off the ranch completely.

Now comes another interesting part in this verse. Who was it that doubted Jesus? Thomas. He didn't think that Jesus could go into Judea again without getting caught and killed. Jesus obviously had other plans. Now, let's look at John 20. In verses 25-25 we see that Thomas was not with the 12 when Jesus appeared to them after his ressurection. So, the disciples are telling Thomas that they saw Jesus. Thomas once again doubts this. He said that "unless I see in His hand the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."  Now comes the neat part. Jesus once again appears to them and talks to Thomas. Jesus tells him to reach and put his fingers on His hands and to touch His side. Thomas now believes. What Mom and I found rather interesting is that Thomas SAW Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead, and yet he doesn't believe that Jesus Himself rose from the dead.  I think that Thomas really is the model of what some Christians are today. God often shows us "miracles and wonders" and answers prayers, yet we often do not Trust Him still.

So, my lesson from God this week was quite an eye opener.  I think that Thomas really hits the nail on the head, so to speak, for me any way.  I am going to try to learn from His example of doubt and not repeat it!!

Calf in the Tub... again

Tuesday morning Dad and Josh went out to go check cows and found my (Rebecca) cow had calved. The calf was cold and not doing well. Dad had to head into work so Josh and I went out and brought the calf in and threw her in the tub. After dousing her for a good while we dried her off then went back out to get Momma cow.    These pictures are taken with my new camera....


It is amazing how some animals are so gentle. The Momma cow was my old show heifer (Faye) and didn't mind at all that we were touching her, putting a halter on her and towing her back to the house behind the pickup, or messing with her baby. We got her into the barn. At this point the baby was still not warm enough and not getting up and nursing. I got some warm milk and was down on the ground in one of the little stalls in the barn feeding her out of a turkey baster (Don't worry, this one is especially marked for animals. You can still come have turkey with us anytime. :D) while Momma cow was standing right in front of me mooing at her baby. Great cow if you ask me. :)

Baby was still not up and doing well so we brought her back in and gave her another bath. She is now up and doing great, nursing and sleeping as little babies do. It took a while for her to figure out that I really wasn't the one to get the milk from, that it came "udderneath" her Momma.

This girl is doing great now, and it will be fun to look at her in the pasture and say, "Do you remember when she was born cold, and we had to throw her in the tub..."

When we're too weary to pray

I read this beautiful poem on a devotional, and I just had to share. I don't know how many times lately I've found myself in this exact spot - just weary. What a wonderful reminder to me to know that God is that Perfect Father who knows best how to love us and give us the rest that we need as we lay our burdens at the foot of His Cross.

"I'm too tired to trust and too tired to pray,
Said one, as the over-taxed strength gave way.
The one conscious thought by my mind possessed,
Is, oh, could I just drop it all and rest.


Will God forgive me, do you suppose,
If I go right to sleep as a baby goes,

Happy Birthday, Rebecca!!

Dearest Daughter,

Oh, how I love this smile because it is you - happy, relaxed, just enjoying life. You have been such a treasure to nurture and disciple these last 19 years!! I can't imagine a better child to "break me in" as a Mom. You've been very patient with me as I used you as the guinea pig, and I am very grateful for that. We love you so much just because you're you. We especially love the big heart that you have for Christ and the desire you have to serve Him in ALL of your life. You always have a welcoming smile to greet anyone that comes through our doors, and you look for ways to make them welcome - even when I'm oblivious to the world. :) You are compassionate with those around you and you always have an ear to listen to their hurts and concerns.

Continue to keep your eyes focused on Christ as you seek the path He has for you. Seek the counsel of Godly people and surround yourself with those that will sharpen you and encourage you to grow in your walk with God. And remember.....we love you.....no matter what!!!

Turning 14!

Dearest Son Joshua,

What a joyous day it was when we welcomed you into our family. We had no idea what to anticipate that day - joy or sorrow - with all that could have gone wrong due to complications. However, here we are 14 years later knowing that God's Hand delivered you safely through so many medical trials and challenges. You show no signs of those days of distress, and instead, you continually remind me of the Glory of God's Hand in all things. You are becoming such a courageous man of God with your desire to study and grow in wisdom as well as knowledge. I love to hear you share your thoughts on God's Word or ideas you have to make this world a better place for all of us. I enjoy your servant's heart as you help me or your sisters around the house and as you encourage and mentor your brother. I feel so blessed to see you take on tasks that will bless Nana during this time as well as your willingness to help anyone who calls and needs an extra pair of hands. It is such a pleasure to see you stepping up and helping around the ranch in an effort to take on tasks that only Daddy can do. It is also so much fun to just laugh with you over a story, joke or memory. We love you so much - just the way you are, no matter what.

New post with.... goggles???

Yes, you have read the title correctly. I have finally posted a new post (yeah!!), and it does have to do with goggles.

I know I am not the only person in the world to have this problem of onions stinging yours eyes when you are cutting/chopping/ and totally annihilating them. Some friends told me about a funny story a while back. There were these children that every time their mom would chop onions, they would run and put their goggles on. At first, I thought that a funny story and rather silly. However, when dear Momma instructed me to chop some onions, I decided I would give it a try. So, off to find the goggles! (kids, do not try this at home! ;))

So, my conclusion; the experiment DID work!! Thank you friends for sharing that story and saving me many hours of heart and eye ache! :)

Late again....

Well, I am afraid that I am late again in typing up an update! As you probably guessed, we have been pretty busy with cattle work. We are finally coming to an end of the hectic busy season and are enjoying some quiet time.

The most interesting thing that happened lately was a square dance! :) We set up a square dance a couple weeks ago. Posting pictures is great, but it sure doesn't capture all the fun everyone has. :)

Heckendorn Update

Hello Friends!



The Heckendorn Herd has been up to a lot these past few weeks. So, here goes for an update! :)



First, we had three bull sales in March. Our first one was at Roswell. We have a family tradition with our bull sales. If our bulls sell well we go and eat at Cattle Baron for supper (Fancier than normal steak house in Roswell.) If they don't sell well, we eat at McDonald's. This year, we ate at Golden Corral because our bulls didn't do really well, but it wasn't really bad either. After enjoying a leisurely dinner with some friends, we started our three hour drive home.



The next weekend, we had our second bull sale in Belen. This one was a day trip, so it was nice to not miss any nights on our own beds. :) It was disappointing, but we praise God for what we do get, even if we would like more.



Our last bull sale was in Tucumcari. We went up the night before and stayed at my grandparent's house. This sale went pretty well. Of course, we understand the circumstances of the economy, so considering this we were happy with what we did get.



Last week, our friend Joe Wells came over. He was taking a blacksmith class in Moriarty and stayed at our house. After the second day, he met two people from Texas that were also at the class. He invited them out for dinner, and we had a blast. Atlanta and Cimmaron Shannon were great people to be around and can play the guitar and fiddle really well. We decided to have them come out for dinner every night for the rest of the week. So, after several late nights and early mornings we were glad to sleep in a little later after they all went home. However, we thoroughly enjoyed them while they were here. :)



So, what is coming up for the Heckendorn Herd? Well, in two weeks we have our CAPE (Christian Association for Parent Educators) Convention. The Herd does the registration as a family. We are able to meet a lot of new people every day and see some familiar faces of friends met previous years. You can check it out at http://www.cape-nm.org/.

After convention, we are looking forward to a week of catching up on family time and maybe throwing in some sewing for the ladies. :)



Right now Joe's older sister is staying with us. She has a job here in Moriarty at Shorty's Bar-B- Que. :) We are going to let her rent out our little apartment while she is working. Until we get that ready, however, she is staying with us in the house. (I am afraid that she had to listen to giggling and hard-to-control laughter last night. We won't say from whom. ;))

Blessed...

Hello Friends!


Last week had blessing after blessing for us. Back in January we had to test a bull, one of our big herd bulls no less, for a double recessive gene called "Curly Calf". If both parents have it, the offspring will be born dead. We have sons of this bull selling in March at some bull sales, and then we have calves of his dropping on the ground now. So, last week we got the test results back and found out that he did not have the gene!


Once again, last week we were testing our yearling bulls. During the test they give the bull a shot in his tail to see if he has TB (tuberculosis). One bull ended up reacting to it. When you have TB in one of your cattle, you have to quarantine the whole herd and start over. Then, for 3 years after that, you have to test EACH cow/bull/calf for the TB at 10$ a head. Our vet had to contact the USDA to come and check the bull. They did a different test for the TB and found out that he was reacting to the Avian TB not bovine TB (we checked for the latter one). The man was saying that this is pretty common because we have chickens and birds eating out of their feed and all that. The blessing is that it is no big deal.

Then, last Saturday as we were getting up from lunch, we saw a vehicle pull up to our yard. We found some dear friends of ours unloading a dishwasher! Our dishwasher had died on us last year so we had been washing by hand, which had been no problem at all. However, here come our friends saying that they found a great deal on it and thought of us. It has just reminded us daily about the Fruit of the Spirit. :)



Now, I ended up not getting around to Mom's birthday post, so I will just say quickly that we were trying to get together with some friends, and Mom's birthday ended up being the date that we were both available. So, we made it a whole day affair and really enjoyed ourselves.

After dinner, all of us sat around the table and took turns telling what we liked about Mom (that is our family tradition). There were many wet eyes afterward as we mentioned the loving spirit of gentleness and diligence to do her best serving her Lord. :)

Birthday fun!

Newcomer!

Hello All!

I have a friend who is raising Labrador Retriever pups and selling them and making quite a profit. After listening to that I came up with a plan of action and am myself going into the lab pup business! I bought the last female from my friend on Sunday. My little pup is a golden color and is doing well. We are calling her "Daisy", but her registered name will probably be different as you want Mom and Dad's name in their name to show her pedigree. Lady and Tramp aren't just accepting her as I hoped. We think they want to make sure that they are still loved and the "older...whatever they think they are, ones". Tramp is getting older and probably is not enjoying the enthusiasm of Daisy, but he seems to accept her as long as she leaves his aching joints alone. She loves to follow him when we take her outside. :) Lady is a little more jealous as this is a new girl, and she has been the only one so far. In a few weeks, it will feel like we have always had Daisy, and we will wonder what life was like without her. For now, Mom and I aren't getting much sleep with her barking to go out then you have to be with her till she goes to sleep. Oh, well. That will pass, too.

Caleb is enjoying playing with the puppy and vice-versa. I love it too as I have a tired puppy at the end of the day, and she does so much better going to sleep and sleeping when she is worn out! Dad asked me the other night if I felt like I had a baby. I thought about it and thought of the differences. Then, I thought of when Daisy and I were both tired, and she looked at me, crawled on my lap and fell asleep with her head under my arm. What can beat that feeling, whether it is animal or baby. I thought of how often we fall asleep in God when life is easy, yet we should be putting our heads under his arm so we can't see when life is hard. So I prayed and just enjoyed the quiet of the early morning as by the time I was really ready to fall asleep she was ready to go out again!!

New Year already!

Hello everyone!

Well, another year gone by. This year has gone by so quickly it is unbelievable!
I am afraid that I didn't keep my New Year's resolutions. It is rather disappointing to read over your list and realize that you haven't kept any of them! However, I am more determined to keep my new ones that I am making this year.
A friend was telling me about a man on a radio station. He said that he kept one of his new year resolutions: That he would never attend another new year's party until next year! :)
I think I want to add that to my list......at least I would be able to keep it! :)
I am exchanging letters with a friend, and she was telling me how she would really like to delight in the Lord. We may read our Bibles and go to church, but are we really delighting in the Lord? If we aren't, then how do we start?
Job 22:26 tells us, "For then you will delight in the Almighty and lift up your face to God."
If we are delighting in Him, we should be able to have a new look at the things He has made.

I am guilty of going through my day without really noticing little flowers that He has made, or thanking Him for my family. I think that we all do things like that. However, if we are supposed to delight in the Lord, then we should be thankful for things like that.

Psalm 1:2 "But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, and in His Law he meditates day and night."

Not only should we be thankful, but we should be thankful ALL the time! We should be meditating on God's Word and living by it.

But how do we delight in the Lord? We see the commandments of it, but how do we apply it to our lives?

God wants us to LIVE the Fruit of the Spirit. They are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, Faithfulness, and Self-control. The one I would like to focus on is Joy.

We usually think about Joy as being happy and fun. However, the word enjoy has a different meaning. It means contentment! So, when we are full of Joy, we should be full of contentment. We should be content with the things, big and small, that God has given us. If we are content or full of Joy, we are delighting in the Lord!

Have you ever done something for someone? Maybe they are sick and need a glass of water. Or maybe your mom is very tired, but the dishes need to be washed. Instead of reminding her that those need to be done, you do it for her. How do you feel? I always feel happy! I am content when I do things for other people.

Philippians 2:3 "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than yourself."

If we are focused on serving others before ourselves we are delighting in God because we are following His Word. We are delighting in the Law of the Lord!

I remember a time when I went through a "selfish streak". I didn't want to do anything and I felt rather depressed. (I know some of you are shocked! haha) I was very sad. Then, my dad held an office party in his new office for all his workers and people that were in the same company. He asked Mom, Rebecca, and me to come help. We did deli trays and such. As I was watching tables, I noticed that the chip bowl was empty. I filled it up. Then someone asked if I could get more dressing. I was starting to serve others, and I started to feel happy. By the end of the day, I was no longer sad. I felt great and ready to serve anyone who asked for help. I learned a very good lesson. When we are selfish (which is against God's Word) we are sad and/or depressed; just the way Satan and his minions want us to feel. When we are serving others and are delighting in His Law, we are defeating those minions and drawing closer to God.

I would like to give another example that I was told from my Dear Mama. :)
We were sitting around the table discussing a Bible verse (Galatians 5:16-25 to be exact.). As we were discussing the particular part "....For the flesh sets itself against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh....." Mom gave this example:

All the time, there is a war raging. It is a war between the flesh and the Spirit, or the minions and the Angels. When we start to walk in the flesh (ex. get mad at our brothers and say hurtful words or don't forgive them) we are helping the minions win against the Angels. When we turn away wrath, we are helping the Angels defeat the minions.

Now, I will tell you that you should really remember this when you start walking in the flesh. I can tell you it works! The other night we had stayed up very late, and I was getting a little grumpy. I was mad at my sister, but I didn't want to admit it or say sorry. As I laid in bed thinking about it and scowling, I started thinking about the fight going on. I could see the evil minion pushing the Angel down every time I had a hateful thought. I started getting worried. What if that minion beat my Angel? I couldn't let it do that. I started thinking about how I was in the wrong and not my sister. Then, I started feeling repentful about what I had done. I could see the minion slowly falling; struggling for the winning slice, but, my Angel was already defeating him to a degree that would make it difficult to get up. Then, I felt VERY sorry and asked for forgiveness. The minion fell down in defeat and the Angel held up his sword in victory. Now, this may sound rather silly and not completely theologically accurate to you, but it brought a picture to me that made the verse so real! I also know that whenever I start feeling like that again, I will think about that Angel and the minion.

Rebecca Birthday

I'm only 10 days late, but I realize I never posted a Happy Birthday to Rebecca this year. We always stay home and enjoy the day with the birthday child, but this year we did something different. Our gift to Rebecca was a trip to a beauty salon complete with new hairstyle and manicure!!! The day was rounded off with shopping, lunch with Dad & Mom, and a Starbuck's coffee treat (thanks to Sarah!). It was a fabulous way to mark the transition of another year for this dear child, but it threw out of my cycle. I do want her to know that late or not, she is still the same special friend to all of us.

We enjoyed cold, snowy weather off and on for the last 10 days, and it reminded me of that day 18 years ago when we welcomed her into our family. What naive but excited parents she had to train. We left the hospital with her in the middle of December and went shopping at the mall, showing her off to anyone and everyone that asked! Then, I begged John to find a Pizza Hut as I had craved that for months. Again, we practically begged people to breath all over her as we were just so proud to be new parents. Our next stop was a WalMart to get some much needed supplies (diapers, clothes, etc - minor things, haha) before we headed to Corona. We were smart by this time and kept her in the car. Well, actually, her Momma was tired and sore from walking all over the mall. Then, we headed out to take her to her new home in Corona - in the middle of the front seat as John wanted her right between us so we could touch her and look at her when we wanted to (no airbags, and again, I point out how naive we were). We made it home after a quick stop at a restaurant in Willard to show off our bundle of joy to Mom's coworkers celebrating a Christmas party. By the time this little girl made it from the hospital to her new home, she had met more people and had been kissed and hugged by more folks than I can add up. The amazing thing was that she survived that and many other "wrong" things that her parents did. Not only did she survive that, but she has managed to grow into such a lovely young woman through 18 years of guinea pig training by parents who still probably don't know how to do it "right".

What we do know, is that Rebecca has been a bigger joy and blessing to us than we ever imagined or thought possible. We've had the privilege of watching her become a composed, intelligent, thoughtful, caring, compassionate, hospitable, loving, witty (and such wit!!), wise, and Godly young woman. She has stretched herself in areas she needs to grow in while still standing firm in her beliefs. She has stood up to folks older and "wiser" than she is and graciously listened to their advice while testing it against God's Word. She has been the guinea pig for John and I - as she lovingly puts it - and has somehow managed to teach us a few things along the way. I can remember when she and all of my dear ones were little, and I wondered how in the world I could possibly enjoy them as they grew up as much as I enjoyed them when they were little. Now that she has grown into one of my best friends, I wonder how I ever managed to enjoy her so much when she was little because I'm having such a blast with her now. We have such lively discussions about books, movies, articles, ideas - the list could go on and on - or we can quietly sit and work on a project in the kitchen and sewing room and enjoy each other's company without a word being spoken.

18!!! WOW!!! They have flown by. She has survived. She is such a blessing to us now, and one day, she will be the greatest blessing to some lucky young man who is brave enough to come and ask for her hand. Until that day, I plan on enjoying the time I have with her! Late or not, we love you dearly.

Thanksgiving all year round

Isn't is wonderful when you start putting your blessings down on paper!! It is amazing how many things there are to be thankful for, and especially when we're to be convinced that the world is the worst it could possibly be. I realize that times are hard (boy do we realize that being in the mortgage industry), but I think so many of you hit the nail on the head with all the things that you are thankful for. We are taught in our society that it's the material things we should be proud of and work for and appreciate and consider important. The things most of you have listed are almost all about relationships. Those things are there during the good times and bad, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health....hmmm, that sounds familiar.. It's true, though. How easily I forget sometimes that it's the people God has placed in our lives near and far that make us who we are and make our lives worth living. I'm thankful for:

- my Merciful God and Savior. I cringe when I think about how quickly and deeply I fail Him in every aspect of my life. I feel like I try so hard to do what is right, and yet I blow it over and over again. What do I get in return? His constant love and grace over and over. I know where I'd be without Him, and I'm grateful I need never fear death because of what He's given me.

- my husband. I struggle with being the wife John needs and deserves, and yet he would never tell anyone that. He is so good to love me right where I am and is willing to try all of my wild and crazy ideas - and there are so many - he truly is the best thing God has ever given me.

- the 4 BEST children I could ever ask for. I have 4 NUTS in my house all the time, and I don't know what I would do without them. I was asked recently what I'd do if time and money weren't an issue, and I said......just exactly what I'm doing. I love being at home with 4 of my 5 best friends. They love me, make me laugh, make me think, encourage me, challenge me, cheer me on, and just love me more.

- my family. I hear so many people complain about family and want to be as far away from them as possible, and I just can't imagine feeling that way. I am surrounded by a love bunch of people that aren't perfect - and I LOVE it that way. They are real. They are there when I need them. They are all over this country, and even though we can't see each other often, we enjoy every minute that we do get blessed with.

- my friends. These are people that had a choice when it came to meeting me. Some of them may wonder why they didn't just walk away when they had the chance, but they didn't for some odd reason. Because of that decision, they have blessed me immensely through the years. I am so blessed to have friends that I can call on anytime for any reason and beg for any kind of help - and surprisingly, they'll come to the rescue. The best part of these wonderful friends is that they understand my crazy life. I just don't have the time I'd like to spend with each of them, and yet, when we do get together, we just seem to pick up right where we left off and take those nuggets of time together and cherish them.

- my home and life. My dad laughed once that this was not the laugh he had ever imagined for me - me neither. I really thought I'd be some famous actress on Broadway (that was my dream when I was a little girl - imagine that. haha), but you know, I can't imagine God giving me anything I'd love more than this home and life I have right now. It's not always easy, but I think God has used those times to teach me so many lessons on contentment and true joy that He would never have gotten into my thick head any other way.

- my country. We have problems. We are going through hard times. We have more hard times ahead. We are turning toward immoral things more and more and turning away from the morals this country was founded on. And yet.....I still can't think of any other country I'd rather live in at the moment. We are still blessed to be able to write about all the things we're thankful for. We can still worship God as He directs us. We can still say God bless you when someone sneezes or Merry Christmas this time of year whether the advertisements say it or not. We still are free, and I'm so very thankful to be here and have the opportunity to participate in a government that will be what I am willing to make it.

That's my list. I have so enjoyed reading every one's lists this past week. It has been wonderful to begin this Christmas season with our hearts focused on what matters the most. Thank you all for giving me that!!

I was in the house when from out back the hollar rang out "Quick! Grab the camera, and Rebecca come see this! It is sooo funny!" Well, who wouldn't drop and run? As you can see below our cat found a comfy place to sleep. We couldn't decide if he was enjoying the view of everyone (You could spy on the other cats from up there) or he got stuck somehow. This is on the south side of our house. He is sitting on the living room fireplace chimney.

To the "Challenged"

Hello To my fellow Challenged!



Here is a thought......



With all the holidays coming up we tend (yes, even me. ;)) to forget what it is all about.



Thanksgiving: A time of celebration for the Pilgrims.

What were they celebrating? This was their time to give Thanks to God for helping them survive the harsh winter, and for giving them a bountiful crop.

So, what do we celebrate on Thanksgiving? Do people even think about it as THANKSgiving?

Lots of people, sadly, celebrate by watching their football team play a game. Some just like the food and the parades, but don't really know why they celebrate, other than the stuff they learn in school that has nothing to do with God.

Today, we live in a sad nation. "One nation under God" isn't what everyone thinks about when they think about the USA. Let us give thanks to God for letting us live in this free country where we can celebrate however we like, worship however we like, Homeschool if we want to, etc. Let us also pray for all of those people out there that don't really know what life is all about. Let us pray that God will touch their lives and soften their hearts towards Him. Let us be good examples of Believers.



Christmas: A time to wish and hope that Santa will come down your chimney, right? WRONG!!!

CHRISTmas is a time to remember that our dear Savior was born and came to the earth to save us, these sinners that we are. We are celebrating that God loved us enough to do that!

Sure it is fun to give gifts and such, but lets remember the REAL reason for the season!! :)

Learnin' experiences

Well, friends, it has been awfully cold, but I braved the weather yesterday to work with "my baby". :) I was able to put the halter on her for the first time yesterday!! She tossed her head a bit and didn't like it, but she didn't give me any trouble. We worked in leading sections of two to three steps in between me telling her "good girl". I think she enjoyed me scratchin' her on her favorite spot more than anything!! :) Then today, I bundled up and went out again. Apart from almost being blown down in the wind, I made the ten steps to get to our corrals. Freckle hardly recognized me at first, as I was all bundled up. After she realized it was me, I put the halter on her again and was able to lead her the entire way around the pen, only stopping once half way through to let her know that she was a good girl. :)

Every day I am able to lead her around larger areas. She is rather smart (bragging again) but gets easily scared fairly by things she has never seen before, as I found out the other day while I was leading her. :) A tumbleweed next to the fence stirred in the wind, and she bolted. I had to let go of the lead rope. After reaching the other end of the pen, she ducked her head and came back to me. I let her know that she was OK, and then of course, she had to see what scared her. She felt rather silly when she found out what it was (I could tell by the way she was blushing. ;))

Now I have to tell some of the irritations of training a baby horse. :) First, I was offended when she wouldn't let me come near her when she was first born. After a month I was able to walk right up to her or she came to me. Then I worked with her (picked up her feet, rubbed her tummy, tried to touch her face, etc). She was fine with picking up her feet, but she didn't like it when I touched her tummy. (She tried to bite me). So we had to learn that you can't bite. :) She is making great progress each time I'm out there, and I enjoy watching her learn.

Freckle was very cute the other day. We had penned up the horses for a couple of days and had just let them out. We kept Leo, our oldest horse, in so that we could fatten him up. Queenie was out in the pasture already, but she heard me pouring some cubes into the metal feeder for Leo and came trotting back to the house. Being the kind hearted person that I am :), I decided to get some cubes for all of them. By the time I came back out, Queenie was already in the corrals, but Freckle had stayed back out in the pasture. She was quite a distance out, so I whistled and called to her. She lifted her head and came running!! Now, I don't know if she was coming to me or if she just realized that mommy was far away, but I do know that she is one smart little girl. (and I still think she was coming to me. :)

Queenie has been rather jealous about every one paying attention to her baby instead of her (she used to be the "baby" until Freckle came along!). In fact, the other day she blocked me from going any where until I scratched her! HA! She is rather smart. :) I guess I can see where Freckle gets it.

Alright, enough of the bragging. Just trust that I am enjoying her immensely. :)

Fiddlin' Girl

Happy Birthday to my Young Man

It's official. I can no longer call Joshua my little boy - he is now 13 years old, and in our home, he has become a young man. We are so proud of the man he is becoming. He loves God and strives daily to become the man God wants him to be (even when it's hard). He has grown into a young man that shows hospitality to anyone that knocks on our door - he always has a handshake and hug for anyone that lets him. He loves to be outdoors just enjoying the space or visiting with the horses or cows or cats or chickens. He is the first one up in the mornings (usually) and is ready to greet everyone with a smile and a kind word. I can't begin to count the number of times he's opened gates and broken ice to be a good steward of the animals God has given us as well as to serve Mom or Dad - and he does it without complaining. When I say it's time to dump trash, he quickly grabs his gloves and starts loading stinky bags into the back of the truck without grumbling a bit, and he always assists the trash guy in unloading. I could go on and on with my "bragging", but I think you get the point. He is proving once again that becoming a teenager is not a bad thing. We have heard so many comments from folks that we'll have another teenager in the house, and we rejoice. It's not a bad thing. Instead, it's such a precious time to watch them grow into their own. I am looking forward to seeing how Joshua continues to grow in his areas of interest. It won't be long before we'll have a plane flying, blacksmithing, gunsmithing, taxidermist working on motors - and as long as he stays the loving, kind, welcoming young man that he is now, we will be thrilled. No matter what he does become, we will always be proud and blessed to call him son. We love you!!!

PS - a little bragging time - this is the deer that he shot in Tucumcari last weekend. It's a 9pt deer with a 30" spread. We will again be eating venison for his birthday dinner.

Encouragement for "the challengers".

This is for those of you, and others, that have decided to take my "challenge".

I received this email, and I thought that this might really encourage you (or it may just really hurt! I had a hard time reading it!! :)). This is so true for many of us, definitely me!! :).

I hope that all of "the challenged" are doing well on the challenge! I am afraid that I am not very regular, and I am still so quick to forget that worshiping Him is more important than worrying about our daily life all of the time!! :)

I also must confess that I have been rather worried and a little scared about this election. Thankfully, God has blessed me with such a peace that I know that whoever wins, God is in control! It has been so wonderful to not worry about whether or not so and so is going to win. Whoever wins, God has a plan, and we can only see a very small portion of it, while He is looking at the whole of it!! (He is probably laughing to Himself thinking "You silly people! I have it under control!! I know the whole plan, you don't! Why do you run around like chickens with your heads cut off when something you don't like happens? I am in control!!" don't you think? :))

RE AD THE FIRST LINE CAREFULLY. . If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God.
