It's very easy to praise God when things are going well, but we are beginning to experience just a taste of what Job must have felt (nothing more than a taste, maybe only an aroma....). We have had an abundance of snow that has made it difficult to get to the cows. We have run out of hay reserves and can't find any at decent prices. We have had 1/3 of our calves die (that's bad when a normal year is only about 5%). Plus, the dishwasher is giving us fits along with our water softener (and we really, really like our water softener). Now, while we are already feeling down , we find ourselves dealing with a transmission on the 4x4, feed pickup that has chosen this moment in time to begin gagging and taking it's last breath. We don't know how much longer it will work for us, but we are really starting to worry. As John sat the other night wondering what we were going to do as we won't have money from bull sales until late March, early April, I couldn't help but wonder what went through Job's mind.
He endured more than we've even begun to fathom, and yet, he continued to praise God. How often do I praise Him when things are going well - lots of rain, lots of grass, an air conditioner that works, vehicles that work, school going smoothly... etc..... How often do I praise God when I burn the bread, have a stuffy nose and just can't seem to get things done? Not often. Now, here I am finding myself anxious about so many things that I just can't control (that's a whole other issue), and am I easily praising God? I must confess, no. I immediately cry out to God, which I know He does want us to do, but I'm crying like a big baby because things aren't a bed of roses right now. Why is it so difficult to cry out to God with a voice that praises Him for all the things I do have? For all the health we are blessed with? With a family that is willing to work hard together? With friends that are willing to offer their hands wherever needed? With a Savior that was willing to lay His life down for mine? How did Job do it?
Did God show Job He loved him more than He shows me? Definitely not. Was Job less materialistic than I am? Maybe. Was Job's a closer walk than mine has been lately? Probably. Or maybe Job just chose to praise God no matter what. Job's walk was probably much closer than mine has been lately, and because of that close relationship he felt with God, Job knew he could trust God to only allow what was best - even if Job couldn't understand how all of those events could be best. Job knew God's character so well, that he knew God would not desire to harm him or hurt him in any way - it goes against God's character. Often, I've lived through difficulties and wondered how it could be best - such as with Caleb. We can look back now and see that it was best that Caleb was not only conceived when he was but born when he was. At the time, though, we simply had to trust. We are now facing another one of those times. We don't know what the best is going to be out of all of this, but we can trust that God's character has not changed. He is still a loving, righteous, just, giving, caring, compassionate God that desires nothing for us but what is best. Maybe what Job did was to make a conscious CHOICE to praise God no matter what - not because he felt like it, but because he knew that was the best he could give to God. That's what we will try to do, too.

I agree with you that it is so easy for us to praise him when things are good. I am finally learning to remind myself that God works it all out for us and I need to keep thanking him for that and get out of his way and let him work. I look back at all he has brought me through and know that it was God that brought me through it.
Now I will finish, for some reason it wouldn't let me type more. i will keep you in my prayers and know that God will bring you all through this too. We love you all!
Thank you for the encouragement. It does help hearing others confirm that in their own lives. Yesterday, about 2 hours after I wrote this, I was reminded that God is at work, so He is awesome in even letting us know He is there.
Oh Cathy. I feel for how you are feeling. Oct. and Nov. were so slow for our business, almost nothing. I would worry almost contantly how we would manage. Dec. was better, but we had jobs in progress that didn't have payment due and we had bills due now! We were anticipating winter being slow, but we weren't anticipating it being this slow. We were wondering if we got lucky with the work we had earlier in the year and we were going to fail. I prayed daily for our business to improve. I worried at night, I couldn't sleep. God listened. One of our regular customers who pays within days needed a significant repair and we had a few smaller jobs come in with immediate payment. Fantastic considering we usually give our customer two weeks-one month to pay depending on the customer, or a large project that would require estimates and such that would also be time consuming and not immediately bring in money. We have also gotten busier in the past couple of weeks and are finally feeling, for now, that this really will work. We aren't crazy to be self-employed.
God will provide. I know that I get into the habit of thanking God for the good times and only asking for help in the bad times. I, too, need to remember to praise Him always. I will pray for you during this time. Even when it seems bleak, you aren't alone. You have friends and family supporting you and most importantly, you always have Him holding you up. Even though it seems we are going through difficulties, it always helps me to remember that He will never give us more than we can handle. It may hurt, it may take us to a place that is uncomfortable, but we *can* handle it if we turn to Him.
I fully agree with you Lisa. He will only give us what we can handle. I am finally learning to get out of his way sometimes and let him have his way. It is so hard to let control of everything up to him, even though we can look back and see how much easier it would have been had we done it sooner. One of the things I give him thanks for the most is having such a supportive family. It is so nice to know we can turn to each other for prayer and support. Lisa, I am so glad things are looking up for you guys. Hang in there Cathy and keep praising him. This will just be one more situation you will be able to share with others how he carries us through these times.
Honey, I remember when we were in college, and we had no money for Christmas. I found some money under our porch and could find nobody who had lost that sum, so I thanked Him, and we had a pretty good Christmas. It seems that when times seem so bad in my life that He always finds a way to see me through. When we pray, He always answers. It's just that sometimes the answer is no, but it is always the RIGHT answer. Hang tough, and remember that I will always love you just as He does.
Dad
Thank you for all your support. We have snow falling right now, and we are praising God!!! We have a great water heater to give warm baths to these calves, and a large pile of wood to keep the stove going all night long to keep them warm in the living room. Praise God for His provisions.
