Dear Ma and Pa

I found this through a friend.  It is a cute letter, and one that means more after living on a ranch.  Not that we have anything against you who live in the city ( I would have no clue how to ride the bus) but there is a difference.  Enjoy!
Love,
Rebecca

Dear Ma and Pa,

I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.

Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc, but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.

We go on 'route marches,' which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A 'route march' is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.

The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake . I only beat him once.. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6' and 130 pounds and he's 6'8' and near 300 pounds dry.

Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,
Alice

Movie Quotes contest!!

Ok, so a dear friend of mine, Samantha, has done a couple posts of movie quotes.  She posts the quote and you have to try to guess what movies they are from. I always had fun doing them... so, I decided I would do one myself!! Here goes! We have just a few for starters....

1) “You’re late… you look terrible!”

2) Character one “Are you sure you’re 18?”
Character two “Why? Do I look older?”

3) Character 1 “… I have two already!”
    Character 2 “Two? That’s great! I have 17!”
Character 1 “17!! I see no point in you beating me!” \

4) “I’m an Uncle…” character faints.

5) Character 1 “Whew, have any odorant?”
Character 2 “Um, yeah, I got wet dog or old dumpster.”

6) Character 1 “Even you couldn’t refuse that!”
Character 2 “Oh yes we could!”

7) Character 1, surprised, “You’re a mouse!”
Character 2 “You people have NO imagination!”

8) “Ever since my sister died, I have not loved as I love ____”

9) “Your friends fight beside you and are not stopped. They fight beside you because they love you.”

10) “I have come, against my better judgment, to tell you how ardently I love and admire you.”

Alright, comment with what quote goes to what movie!!  I won't publish any of comments until next week when I reveal the answers. :-) Can't wait to see what everyone thinks!!

Love, Sarah

A brand new tag!!

Miss Martha Joy tagged me with her brand new tag that she came up with! It is really cute, so enjoy!!

1) Do you like to garden? Yes, for the most part. Some days I can get tired of it. I especially love doing flower and herb gardens.

2) If so, what’s your favorite part about it? Probably the harvesting part, watering early in the morning, and eating the produce! lol!

3) What’s your favorite kind of animal(s)/bird(s)? Hmm.. Well, I LOVE kittens, but I also love horses. They are so powerful that one can't help seeing the Mighty hand work of the Lord all over them! I like pretty much any kind of bird, but eagles are my favorite. Very Majestic. :)
4) Do you have that animal?  Yes to the kittens and horses.. no to the eagle... :(

5) Do you like to sew? Yup! Enough to start a business, any way!

6) What’s your favorite color(s)? Ooh.. that is SO hard. I like pretty much any color except for ugly greens or yellows....
7) Do you have your own room? No. I am currently sharing with my three wonderful siblings.

Do you like to cook/bake? Absolutely! I love coming up with new recipes, or improvising on old recipes.

9) If so, which one is your favorite? Probably baking.. only because when you are cooking you typically have to sit there and watch the pot to make sure you aren't burning any thing, whereas with baking you can pop it in the oven, set the timer, and then go do something else. I TRY to be frugal with my time!! lol!
10) What is your favorite thing to make in that category? Hmm.. cookies, brownies, casseroles, etc.

11) Do you like to wear shoes? Sometimes.. I mostly go barefoot, though..

12) If so, what kind is your favorite kind to wear? I like my clogs and my old fashioned boots.
13) Do you have cowgirl boots? Yup, but I need a new pair because mine are too small!

14) If so, do you like them? Right now, no because the hurt to wear them. Other wise, yes!

15) Do you have any inside animals/birds? (parakeets, parrots, fish, etc.) Nope
16) If so, what’s its name and color?

17) When is your birthday? July 21st

18) What state were you born in? New Mexico

19) Were you born at home? Nope.. I was an emergency C-Section..

20) Have you ever moved…and if so, did you move to a different state? Several times, but never out of state.

21) What is your favorite comic strip? I dunno.. we don't get the newspaper, so I never see them any more..what’s your favorite character in your favorite comic strip?)

22) Did you have fun with this tag? Yes!

Now I tag any one who wants to do this one!! It was lots of fun, girls!

Thanks for tagging me, Martha Joy!!

Love, Sarah

Anwered Prayers and a Tag from Lauren!

Howdy dear readers!

Thank you so much for your prayers. Becca is feeling MUCH better this morning and is her old chipper self. :-)

So, quite some time ago, Lauren over at Least in the Kingdom, awarded/tagged me with the Versatile Blogger award!  Thank you so much, Dear Lauren, for tagging me! I have always enjoyed reading your blog and encouraging words that you post. I glean so much from your modesty posts, biblical posts, and love all the pictures and stories about your life!

It comes with a tag as well, so here goes!

The rules:

You must tell 7 random fact about yourself, thank the person who gave it to you, and pass it on!

1. I love anything old fashioned. I have even ridden a cow (hey, some people used to ride cows.. who is that one character in the Andy Griffith show that used to get drunk and ride his cow down the streets? Can't remember his name... )

2. I HATE grasshoppers.  If any one wants to see me scream like a I don't know what and watch me run like the wind, hold a grasshopper in my face. lol! I am serious, but, um, don't actually do it, k? lol!!

3. I LOVE long comments! Either writing them, or receiving them.  Like Lauren, if I have nothing to write, I will just write random thing.. half the time it is practicing my cursive on a random piece of paper, or writing a length letter to someone I had just seen the day before!

4. In all the years I have been ranching, I have only been kicked by a calf twice, and never fallen off of a horse. Dad says I just don't have much experience yet.. lol!!

5. I don't wear shoes unless absolutely necessary. In other words, even in the dead of winter, I run around in bare feet on the cold floors. The only time I put on shoes on is if we are going somewhere, or I have to venture father than the front yard.... (or her Momma makes her.....posted by the Momma :))

6. I have a random reading habit. I read like 'crazy' (or my opinion of crazy.. I am sure lots of other people can read more than my 'crazy' and consider it normal! lol!) for about 2-3 months, and then I cannot pick up a single book for about a month. After that month I WANT to read a good book. It kind of feels like needing some water after running for a long time... yup, I know....

7. I am extremely random person. My letters, emails, posts, etc, usually have no organization to them. No flowing of subjects. I just jump from one to another, as most of you probably know (or as you saw in the random facts above..)!! Because I am so random, I absolutely love this tag! I love learning other random facts about different people.

Ok, I tag:

Samantha at Simple Delights!  Samantha is one of my dearest friends, although I have never met her. We have been pen pals for about 2 years now, I Think (right, Samantha??)...  Her blog is so lovely! I hope you go and visit and follow if you aren't already!  She has tons of fun stuff; events, pictures, posts about herself, fashion shows, and is even going to possibly host a recipe contest pretty soon!! I always feel so encouraged and uplifted after visiting her blog.

Martha Joy!!  I met Martha through our giveaway and am so glad I did!!  She has such a sweet personality and is fun loving and full of... Joy!!  Her blog is so very cheerful and she is always posting neat things. You'll need a Wordpress account to visit, but I highly recommend that you get one! You won't want to miss out on her blog On the farm with MJoy!

Johanna at An Old Fashioned Girl!  Johanna and I have only known each other for a few months, but already we have found out we have several things in common (like sharing the same birthday!).  Johanna is such a sweet, lovely, caring, gentle, and beautiful young woman of God! I love reading her blog. She has so many different kinds of posts. Daily life posts, pictures, bible studies, recipes, fashion show events that she is participating in, and so much more! I am sure that once you visit her blog you will want to visit it again! Johanna has encouraged me in my walk with the Lord in so many ways, and I hope she will encourage you too!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day!! It is freezing cold at our house, so we have a nice roaring fire in our wood stove and kittens to snuggle with!! :-)

Enjoying the fall weather,
Sarah

We are here, we are here, we are here!!!

Ok, a little "Horton Hears a Who" humor.. lol!!

However, the Herd IS here.. we have NOT fallen off the face of the earth! :-) lol!  Actually, we just had a rather busy weekend weaning calves and preg checking cows.  Becca was out there snapping pics when she wasn't busy, so you can look forward to a better post coming soon.

I will let Becca share some of the exciting highlights (injuries that occured, cows on the freeway, etc) when she posts pics. :-) I must say, though, that I am rather dissapointed.  I got kicked right in the thigh by a 650lb calf. Yes, it hurt. The bummer is that my bruise is already fading away.  Ok, maybe most girls don't like battle scars (or as one friend put it "cattle scars"), but when something unusual happens like that, it is fun to have something to show, right? Well, I can't exactly show my bruise, but it is fun to 'say' things about it; how big it got, what color is was, etc.  Oh well!!  My dad saw the whole kick thing happen and he said there was a perfect hoof mark on my blue jeans before I brushed off the dirt. lol!!

So, is any one glad they couldn't volunteer? lol!!!

Hope everyone is having a good evening!

Your limping authoress (ok, I am not actually limping.. lol!)

Not a good time...

to view recipes!!!!  5 pm after a hard days work is NOT the best time to look for recipes!!!  I thought I would share a link for my new favorite recipe place.  http://www.recipe.com/!!

It has absolutely ALL the best recipes ever! One evening when I was totally out of ideas, I went online and found this. Our supper that night was super yum! lol!  You can even narrow your search to "hamburger" (all the recipes tha require hamburger), "pork", etc! It is great!

Any way, I was needing calzone dough today for supper. Poor man's pies! They are SOOOO good and cheap to make too!! Cabbage, hamburger, some swiss cheese, and mustard. We have our own hamburger, so we never have to buy from the store.  Cabbage comes from the farm for free, so it is a pretty good deal! Lots of mustard, though.. lol!!

Hope you all try it and let me know what recipes you find!

Love always, Sarah

PS don't those pictures look SO good!!! I am SOOO hungry!! ;-) =P

Long time need to post tag!!

Howdy friends!! Liz Darcy has been so very kind and has tagged me!!  I was SO excited to receive it. :-)  However, this dense headed person sitting at the desk was rather silly and didn't know which tag it was... Any way, Liz has been so very kind and has copied out the questions for me.  So, here goes!!

(1) Top 3 Authors: Hmm.... Well, I really like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, and George McDonald.  Or anyone who can write a good book!!

 (2) Top 3 male characters:  Well, I don't know!! I like SO many! Mr. Darcy  in Pride and Prejudice would definitely be one, then John Ridd in Lorna Doone, and male characters in my own books. lol!!!  Well, I do like Edmond in the Narnia series.. at the moment I can't much think of who else I really like! Oh, I know.  I love Malcolm McPhail in The Fisherman's Lady (McDonald)

(3) Top 3 female characters: Lizzy Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Anne in Persuasion,

(4) Top 20 fictional books: The Fisherman's Lady and it's sequel The Marquis' Secret, A Daughters Devotion, The Landlady's Master (all of the afore mentioned are by George McDonald), Pearl Maiden, An Old Fashioned Girl (Alcott), The Reign of Terror, The Kingdom Series (6 in all.. if you have EVER wanted a book that had knights and ladies, this is a definite read!!! They are an Allegory of the Bible and I have read them a dozen times.. in fact, my brother and I have read them so many times that we had to buy new copies because the other was falling apart! they are by Chuck Black), Lord of the Rings (3 in all), Roses for Mama (Janette Oke), The Millie Keith series (I think there are 8 in the series and I believe they were written by the same lady who wrote the Elsie Dinsmore series. For those of you who loved Elsie, you will like Millie. For those of you who didn't much care for Elsie, you will LOVE the Millie Keith series!!!) Drums of Change (Janette Oke)

(5) Top 3 books most recently read: A Daughter's Devotion, The Fisherman's Lady, and I don't know what I read before that....

(6) 3 Worst books ever read: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.  DO NOT EVER read that book. Absolutely awful! If you are an extremely strong Christian, then read it with your family and have a good discussion.. other wise, steer away from it! I didn't much care for the Hobbit (which is like a pre thing to the Lord of the Rings series) that doesn't mean I hate it though... I can't think of anything else.  I don't just pick up a book lightly, so I don't usually read books that I end up not liking in the end.

(7) Top 5 scenes from any books: Any of the fighting scenes in the Kingdom Series, but particularly when one of the knights, after being captured, ends up pinned to the ground by a sword through his middle.  He has to struggle out of it and then fight the evil animals in order to escape. Second one would be when one of the knights is chasing after the evil men who captured the lady and then the battle that ensues afterward.. Third would be something in Pearl Maiden (which I can't say because it would give it away!!).  Fourth would be when Eomor (sp?) in Lord of the Rings finds his sister dead on the battle fields.  It is such a wonderful portrait of a brother's love for his sister and makes me cry every time I read/watch it!!! and Fifth would have to be a couple of battles in Lord of the Rings.

(8) The book(s) that made me cry the most: Lord of the Rings, The Kingdom series, House of Love (Lamplighter Publishing), Roses for Mama, The Sparrow and the Blue bird (I think that is the title.. written by Janette Oke).

(9) The books that made me laugh the most: Lord of the Rings, The Kingdom series, a few Janette Oke books, the Millie Keith Series

(10) The books that made me feel good the most at the end: Lord of the Rings and the Kingdom Series (can you tell I really love those books?!?!), Pearl Maiden, A Daughter's Devotion, the Millie Keith Series.

(11) Contemporary or Historical? Mostly Historical because I am a very old fashioned girl.. I can't really remember reading an contemporary books any way...

(12) Science fiction, Fantasy or Horror? I am not really sure what defines Science fiction or Fantasy, but definitely NOT horror!!!! a Good clean book for me,  please!

(13) Hardback, Trade Paperback, or Mass Market Paperback? I dunno.. I like hard back and paper back, both, but really, really old hard back books are my favorite!!  What in the world does Mass Market paper back look like??

(14) Barnes and Noble or amazon? Um, it would depend... preferably the library!!! I hardly ever buy book for myself, so I am not totally familiar with either. Probably Amazon, though, because it would more than likely be a whole lot cheaper!

(15) Bookmark or Dog ear? Book mark only!!!!

(16) Alphabetize by Author, Alphabetize by title or no organization whatsoever? Mostly no organization.. we kids would sometimes organize our books into groups of series and whatnot... other than that, don't expect much! lol!

(17) Keep, Throw Away, or Sell? I have only thrown one book away in my whole life, and I have never had more pleasure. lol! The picture of Dorian Gray. NASTY!! Other wise I like to keep or sell if I don't much like them.

(18) Little Women or Anne of Green Gables? Anne, definitely.. I have some rather humorous stories concerning myself after I read Anne of Green Gables, the whole series, so it holds fond memories! lol!

(19) Short Story or Novel? Both

(20) Stop Reading when tired or chapter breaks? Depends.  If it is good, I will stop in between chapters, if it is somewhat dull, I can bear parting with it in the middle of a chapter when I am tired of it.

 (21) "It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"? Neither, but as they are just trying to get an idea of what I like... One dark and stormy night... lol!

(22) buy or borrow? Well, like I said, I don't much buy books. So, that means I borrow a lot. If there is a book that really strikes my fancy, then I will buy it. However, I usually hardly have any money to buy anything any way..

(23) Standalone or series? Series can be good things, but so are standalones... Depends, I guess!!

(24) Tidy Ending or Cliff Hanger? Well, if it is a standalone, then I definitely don't want a cliff hanger. However, if it is a series, I don't mind the cliff hanger... so long as I have the next book!!! LOL!

Ok, so, I tag:
Samantha
Rebecca (yes, that is you dear sis!)
Rachelle (I am making her save up for when she gets her blog... lol!)
Atlanta
Martha Joy

It is raining here!!! HURRAY!! I LOVE rain.. though, I got soaked in it earlier from rescuing the keys from the roof (long story!). However, that is ok. Romantic to get soaked in the rain, right? lol!!

I am just heading over to draw the winners to our give away, so be sure to check here tomorrow morning.  If I do get extra entries before the night ends, I will simply redraw. But, I am just too excited to hold off much longer!!

Much love to all!!

button problems and a prayer request

Hello friends!

Ok, I have been having problems with our blog buttons.  One of the participants in our giveaway informed me that when she checked the button, it wouldn't work (once she had put it on her blog).  So, I have finally gotten around to fixing it.... I hope!

So, if you have put our blog button on your side bar, please check to make sure it works.. if not, please go and re-put it on your blog with the new address.  Hopefully it should work.  If someone updates our button on their blog, please let me know and I can drop by and see if it is working properly.

Thanks so much!  Hoping everyone is having a lovely day!

Oh, I would also ask prayers for a very dear friend of ours.  He had surgery this past week and is in a lot of pain.  Unfortunately it sounds like the pain medicine isn't working too well.  Please pray that God will give him peace and that he will feel comforted with God's arm's around him.  He has been so very patient and doesn't complain, I know, but it is still terribly hard.

Thank you!

Sarah

Root Beer float Fix

Howdy there!!

Ok, I just figured up a *healthy* way to have a Root Beer Float! lol!!  Ok, perhaps it isn't *healthy* per say, but is is quick and easy!

So, put some root beer in a cup.  Next take some heavy cream, half & half, or milk (heavy cream or half &half works best) and add some to your root beer.  (you may need to add more later on after you have tasted it).  Now add a bit of vanilla.  Ta-da!!!  Super simple, super good!!

Why healthy, you might ask? Well, because Ice Cream has extra sugar in it, you get less sugar by using just heavy cream and vanilla, but it still tastes great!  Although, if you are the kind of person to hurry and drink your float before your ice cream melts, you may not like this.  However, I like to let my ice cream melt and then drink it all together. :-) LOL!

So, go and try it and let me know what you think!!

Also, drop me some dinner suggestions.. I am suppose to do dinner while Mom, Becca, and Josh are doing market, but I haven't the slightest idea as to what I should do!!!

So, what do you suggest???

Sarah

Randomness and a good deal on skirts!

Yes, this post is purely random.  Why? Well, it doesn't have much of a point.  However, I wanted to say "HELLO!" to all of our readers. lol!

Actually, I do have a few things to post about. :-)

First off, I am excited to say that I will be adding some new things to my shop.  I have a brown linen/cotton material (tanish-khaki brown) that I will be making a skirt out of.. However, I will actually be listing this one for sale on the shop.  The skirt I have listed right now is mine, but I wanted to just list something else on there, and customers get an idea of what kind of sewing I do.
So, my problem: what size do I make it? Most everyone who has voted on my pole is size 8.. so, should I do size 8? I also don't know if someone would be interested in actually buying it.
Secondly, I am looking for someone to do a custom order with.  I would like to get some practice on doing custom orders on skirts and was looking for a volunteer. ;-)  If I find someone to do this for me, I will use the brown material just mentioned, and make you only pay around $15 dollars.  So, this is a great deal, Ladies!! =D
If anyone is SERIOUSLY interested in this, please let me know..
Also, I am trying to sell some Cotton Sheer fabric. This is PERFECT for Civil War reenactors.  I have 10 yards of it.  So, if any of you have reenactor friends, or are reenactors yourselves, please pass the word along! I am going to sell it for $5-$6 dollars a yard.
   Picture below:

I just had a very fun, old fashioned delight today.. making bread!!  I LOVE making bread. Especially when I can knead it. There is nothing more satisfying than kneading a ball of bread dough.  I feel like a content little housekeeper/homemaker when I can knead bread.  Right now it is baking in the oven.
So, off to get dressed for the evening to be spent with some dear friends! :-) Fun, fun, fun!
Hope everyone is having a wonderful Friday evening!

Blessings,
Sarah

Regency pictures.. finally!!

Ok friends!! The post you have been waiting for...  Sorry this has taken so long to put up. I have been trying to edit photos, send photos to Ellie to edit, and all that sort of thing.  However, our long efforts have paid off!!  Here ya go!

Ellie- Is younger sister to Susan, rather romantic, and has learned many life lessons.  She is gentle and kind, always there for help-even if her suggestions may not always be the best for a situation- and can always listen if anyone needs to talk.  She is rarely in a bad mood. :-)

Susan- Older sister to Ellie. Is very practical in every way, and doesn't let finery rule over her.  She is always neatly kept and rarely changes her hairstyle or design of clothing.  She keeps track of the expenses and any other thing that needs taking care of (such as making sure Adele serves tea on time!)

Amy- A very sweet girl who is cousin to Susan and Ellie.  She lives with her mother, though they don't get along very well.  Amy's favorite times are spent with the "Sisters" (as they are commonly known).  She has many fun adventures when staying with them, and often learns much.

Adele- French servant to the Sisters.  She isn't very punctual, but she tries.  She has been with the Sisters for a long time and plans on staying with them.  She can take care of their every need at any time perfectly, and can often heal an afternoon of dullness with her comical English pronunciation.

I, unfortunately, don't have any pictures of the boy's outfits.  We also don't really have anything planned for them, as we are out of funds and material. ;-)  However, top hats out of foam work very well. =D I will try to get pictures of them soon...

Now, enjoy some more fun pictures!!

More details of Amy's dress.  I have to admit, I had way too much fun with this one!! I sewed it, whereas Ellie and Susan sewed their own. ;-)  Any way, I had tons of fun sewing it, and then having the satisfactory pride of taking the pictures! lol!

Susan's dress was really fun, too!! We didn't have enough red material for the sleeves (we were simply using whatever fabric we had on hand.) so we had to substitute for white instead.  I had fun getting some cool shots of her when she wasn't looking. ;-) lol!!

Ellie's dress was really fun in it's own unique way.  She sewed it, but I had to put in the sleeves and do binding.  I had fun seeing how it came along.  I always love how I can see a certain material and envision it just so, and it actually turns out the way I thought!! So satisfactory!! lol!!   Isn't she just beautiful??

My costume was rather.. interesting. lol!! I had quite a few problems along the way, and I did a lot of it free pattern, or pattern free, whichever way you want to look at it. lol!  The cap isn't really historically right, but that was all we had. :-)  And if you really want to know our secret, any fabric that is WHITE is a sheet.. hey, ya use what ya gotta use! lol!

"Oh, how do I look today??"

*gasp and groan* "I hope no one sees my face today.. " lol!!

Let's walk in the garden instead... ;-)

Ok, now just for a few pictures more that Josh took. :-) Hope this post doesn't crash your computer!!!

MY FAVORITE!!

Ok, here are some pics that Ellie snapped of me. I had brought an old book that I had brought as a photo prop.  I just started reading while Susan smiled and listened. ;-) lol!!

So, leave a comment to let me know what you think, and which photo(s) you like best!!

Well, that is all folks!! Hope you enjoyed!

In Christ,
Sarah

PS Don't despair!  The Give away is coming REALLY soon.. I am just waiting for a few things and then we will get it underway. :-) So sorry about it being late!!

Give away postponed..

Hello friends!

Our giveaway is going to be postponed until the end of this week.. I have realized that I have been spending a lot of time on the computer, so I am taking some time to get my focus back where it should be.  I would deeply covet your prayers as I go through this week, because it isn't easy battling the devil and his holds over you.

So, just stay posted for a few more days!!

Thanks so much!
Sarah
